Where is Artist Point?

Artist Point is located in the PNW area within the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington State. With stunning views of Mt. Baker and the surrounding Cascade Range, the views almost seem too good to be true. The lookout at Artist Point is over 5,000 ft in elevation so you can only imagine how epic the views of the surrounding glaciers, mountains, and lakes are.

How to Get to Artist Point

The closest airport to Artist Point is Bellingham Airport which is about 1.5 hours away but there aren’t nearly as many flight options. Your best option is Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. From this airport, it is about a 3-hour drive to Artist Point so you will definitely need to rent a car.

Can you elope there year-round?

While you can technically go to Artist Point year-round, it is definitely more ideal at certain times of the year. The best months for an elopement at Artist Point are August and September.

Do you need a permit to elope at Artist Point?

No, you do not need a permit to elope at Artist Point unless you have more than 75 people attending. You will have to purchase a $5 parking pass.

Best Time of the Year to Elope at Artist Point

Late Summer

Because Artist Point is covered in snow almost year-round, you have a much shorter window of time where the weather and road conditions are the most ideal. The best months to elope at Artist Point are August and September. During these months you will experience warmer temperatures, miles of wildflower meadows, and of course no snow.

With Artist Point only getting 3, maybe 4 months a year with no snow, those months are pretty busy. Summer visitors are abundant meaning full parking lots, crowds of people, and less privacy. But, if you want to do your best to avoid the crowds, opt for a weekday elopement at sunrise.

A Fall or Winter Elopement at Artist Point

The Fall months at Artist Point are very short. This time is usually from late September to early October. Some days you will have absolutely gorgeous weather while other days might bring lots of fog and rain. But due to the unpredictability of the weather, the crowds significantly decrease meaning you will have more privacy. And I for one, absolutely love rainy elopements. It gives The Notebook vibes which I am all for.

The winter months at Artist Point are from mid-October to late May and it brings a LOT of snow. If you’re up for snowboarding, skiing, or snowshoeing elopement, then this is definitely the time of year to do it. But, because of the abundant amount of snow this area receives, road closures are quite common and chains are required on all vehicles.

Okay, now let’s chat about what an elopement day at Artist Point could look like. Whether you do a sunrise or sunset elopement, this is how I would recommend you spend your day.

Couples Portraits at Artist Point Lookout

Once you arrive at Artist Point, first take a few moments to appreciate the views of Mt. Bakers and that you are about to marry the love of your life. Then take tons of couples portraits at the lookout point because it is absolutely stunning and the perfect place to start off your elopement day.

Ceremony at Bagley Lakes

Then, head to Bagley Lakes which is the most romantic spot for your ceremony. I know I keep saying this but the views here are incredible. After your ceremony, you can celebrate with some champagne or beer and then continue exploring the area.

You can choose to spend some time hiking or you could bring some picnic supplies, lay out a nice blanket, and enjoy a post-ceremony celebration.

Head into Town for Some Food & Drinks

After spending your epic elopement day at Artist Point, you can head back into whatever town you are staying in for a nice dinner at a restaurant. Or if you are staying in an Airbnb with a kitchen, I highly recommend planning a private meal for just the two of you. Then if your Airbnb has a jacuzzi or fireplace, pour yourselves a glass of wine and soak in one of the best days!

Artist Point Elopement Tips

Check the weather ahead of time. It’s Washington so the weather can be a bit unpredictable. If you know it is going to be raining, you can come prepared with umbrellas, good shoes, warm layers, and maybe even a change of clothes.
Be prepared for the drive up to Artist Point. It is a very windy, long road that is very tough if you get car sick. I recommend bringing some motion sickness medicine to help with that.
There is little to no cell service on the way up to Artist Point so I recommend downloading a map or your instructions before you leave.
Drink LOTS of water and bring some food. Artist Point is very high up in elevation so dehydration hits much harder. And I know it’s your wedding day but you NEED to remember to eat.
Wear sunscreen as the sun is very strong in the summer months at this elevation.
Bring some bug spray. There can be lots of mosquitoes in the area so I definitely recommend bringing some just in case.
Wear shoes that provide you with good traction as there is lots of uneven terrain if you choose to explore the area.

Permits, Legalities, & Marriage Laws

Artist Point Permits

Luckily permits are something you will only have to worry about at Artist Point if you are having a wedding with more than 75 people attending. The only thing you will need to do is purchase a $5 paking pass which I recommend buying ahead of time.

Washington State Marriage Laws & Legalities

When it comes to obtaining your Washington State marriage license you will need to make sure you plan ahead of time. I say this because Washington has a three-day waiting period, meaning you can’t get legally married for three days after you get your marriage license. The marriage license will also expire within 60 days. While you can apply in person or by mail, the easiest option is to apply online.

Fill out the online marriage license application.
After applying online, contact recording@co.whatcom.wa.us so they can send the Application and Affidavit for the Marriage License to you. Both parties must have their signature notarized.
In 3 business days, you will receive a call to pay the $62 application fee. Once you have paid, your marriage license will be mailed to you.
Once you have your elopement ceremony, your officiant must drop off the signed marriage license to be processed.
